Judith Currelly Self Portrait with Caribou Herd Painting

JUDITH CURRELLY

Judith Currelly (b. 1946) is a Canadian painter who has earned national acclaim for her tactile and mystical paintings, inspired by the stark vastness of Northern British Columbia and the Yukon. She employs various texture-enhancing techniques such as scraping, scoring, bevelling and staining the surface of the wood to imply geological forms.

She was born in Toronto, Ontario and studied at the Ontario College of Art and Design as well as the University of Victoria, BC. A bush pilot for 30 years, she is inspired by the aerial perspective of northern British Columbia, the Yukon, and Nunavut. Her elegant and serene oil paintings pay tribute to the dynamic relationships of living complexes – from the tiniest ecosystems to the vast and intricate interplay of air, land, water. She employs various texture-enhancing techniques such as scraping, scoring, bevelling, and staining the surface of the wood to imply geological forms. Though she is best known for her large panel paintings, she is also a talented printmaker.

Currelly's exhibition record spans three decades. Her unique work has earned her numerous awards and grants, as well as an elected membership to the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts. Her paintings are included in numerous private, corporate, and public collections including the Canada Council Art Bank, the Governor General’s Heritage Collection, Rideau Hall, and the Hamilton Art Gallery in Ontario.
