W.H. Webb No Way Painting

W.H. WEBB

W.H. Webb (b. 1940) is an English-Canadian painter, best known for his large scale topographical landscapes of Alberta.

Born and raised in England, he studied art education at Padgate College of Education, then went on to study painting, sculpture, and printmaking at University of Manchester. During this time, Webb participated in group exhibitions at the Avgarde Gallery in Manchester and was chosen to present his work at the Northern Colleges Exhibition in 1963. He taught art at in Birmingham and Newton-le-Willows, before immigrating to Canada in 1968.

Working as an art educator and administrator in Fort McMurray and Castor, Alberta, Webb continued to paint in his free time. His first solo exhibition was at the West End Gallery in 1986. In 1990, he retired from his position as Superintendent of the Wainwright School Division to become a professional artist. Further solo exhibitions ensued at the Wallace Galleries in Calgary and the Hollander York Gallery in Toronto.

Webb considers his work “painterly realism.” His tecnique with acrylic paint is reminiscent of the traditional school of watercolourists. While his paintings are precise and representative, they are also intellectually developed with the inter-related elements of space, form, colour, line, unity, and rhythm. His paintings are enthusiastically collected across Canada, the United States, and Europe.
