Gary Kennedy The Boulder Painting

GARY KENNEDY

Gary Kennedy is a painter from Port de Grave, Newfoundland, best known for his realist oil serigraphs of nostalgic scenes of Newfoundland life. He developed his personal style under the guidance of his mentor George Noseworthy, and American artist who moved to Port de Grave in 1966. Kennedy was featured in a TIME magazine article in 1970 with George Noseworthy, and was considered to be his most promising protege.

Encouraged by the success of his first exhibitions, Kennedy became a full-time artist in 1984. His first major exhibition was held at the House of Commons Parliament Building along with fellow Newfoundland artists in May of 1988. To create his hyper detailed work, Kennedy used a silk-screening technique, using millions of overlaid, primary colored dots, similar to pointillism. Two of his serigraph, First Snow in February 1989 (French Edition, February 1990) and Stephen and the Boys in August 1994, were featured on the back-cover of Reader’s Digest.

His serigraphs She Opened Doors (1993), She Turned Another Page (1998) and She Believed (2003) were commissioned by the Vera Perlin Society, a Newfoundland charity dedicated to the service and support individuals and families with developmental disabilities.

For the last decade, he has worked in the medium of oil-on-canvas, though his meticulous process remains. His landscape paintings entitled Seasons in the Park, depicting scenes of Bowring Park in St. John’s, Newfoundland are made up of thousands of tiny brush strokes.

In 2004, he had another solo exhibition entitled Moments in Time which included the paintings seen below Back Cove (54½” x 80”), depicting a scene of the rugged Newfoundland coastline. In addition to other paintings such as The Lighthouse Cleaners (56” x 73½”) and The Fishermen of Hibbs Hole (53” x 70¾”).

His work is exhibited in many galleries across Canada and can also be found in private and public collections in Australia, Norway, England, Ireland, and the United States, including The Rooms Provincial Gallery in St. John’s, Newfoundland.
